NEWS SUMMARY INTELLIGENCE-REPORT THURSDAY 5/9-FRIDAY 5/10/2019

Tariffs on some goods imported from China were raised from 10 to 25 percent effective at 12:01 AM Eastern US time Friday morning.

Trade talks with China were underway Thursday as the deadline approached.

President Trump is planning to raise tariffs on additional Chinese goods.

China meanwhile is saying that it will take countermeasures in response to the US tariff hikes.

"America stands with the GREAT PEOPLE of Venezuela for however long it takes!"


President Trump tweeted late Wednesday night just hours after secret police in Venezuela arrested the Vice-President of the country's National Assembly.

Edgar Zambrano was surrounded in his car and when he refused to get out, he was towed in his car to the headquarters of SEBIN.


North Korea conducting missile tests Thursday.    Two missiles fired from the northwestern part of the country at 330 am US Eastern time,  430 pm in North Korea.   They traveled 260 miles landing in the sea.   This is the second North Korean missile test in five days.

The US seizing a North Korean cargo ship, accusing it of breaking international sanctions.   The cargo ship was impounded in April 2018 by Indonesian authorities.

Russia urging other nations to keep doing business with Iran in spite of new sanctions announced this week by the United States and Iranian moves to operate outside the nuclear deal.     Last week the United States kept five waivers in place to allow Russian work to continue in Iran.

Russia wants a meeting of the nations involved in JCPOA nuclear deal of 2015,

We aren't sure what the next moves from Washington will be on Venezuela, North Korea or Iran, among other things.

But Secretary of State Mike Pompeo staying in Washington Thursday cancelling  a planned trip to Greenland.

On top of the plateful of international issues already mentioned, matters in Syria are heating up again with Syrian ground forces advancing into jihadist held territory in the north this week with Russian air support part of the mix.

Videos showing alleged victims have began to appear online with the "White Helmets" group active in the region.     "White Helmets" videos of alleged victims of the Syrian side of the seven year old civil war have included alleged chemical attacks that led twice to US military action in Syria since Donald Trump became President.

A former US intelligence analyst arrested Thursday charged with leaking classified documents to reporter.   

Daniel Everette Hale of Nashville accused of providing information that was used by "The Intercept" for its publication of "The Drone Papers" in October 2015.

The article provided details on how a US military assassination program using drones works.

Meanwhile, former intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning released after being held for 62 days during which she refused to testify before a grand jury.    Manning's release coincided with end of the grand jury's service.


Manning served prison time after being convicted for leaking to Wikileaks and testimony is being sought in connection with the case being developed by the Justice Department against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Manning ordered back next Thursday to again testify before a new grand jury.

The election campaign continues in the UK for the European Parliament elections on May23rd, but in a disturbing development, the United Kingdom Independence Party, UKIP, was excluded from a candidates event held in a school in Salisbury, England Thursday.

On the other hand the leader of the new Brexit Party is getting center stage and plenty of attention from the mainstream media.   Nigel Farage getting a place on the most "mainstream" of British media outlets, the BBC.   Farage appeared on BBC's "Question Time" Thursday night.

Meanwhile activist Tommy Robinson, Independent candidate for European Parliament from North West England, asks:

"Do you think Nigel Farage has even been to an estate like this?"


Robinson praised Farage for his work on Brexit but said Farage's new party is just another politically correct institution indifferent to the plight of working class people like those at the housing estate in Stockport where he spoke.    Robinson's whole campaign video is at this link.....HERE




Counting in South Africa's election showing a lead for the dominant left-leaning African National Congress nationwide but some increased support for the main opposition party, the centrist Democratic Alliance.

The more left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters are also picking up significant support.

And here in the United States, 109 hate crime charges filed by federal prosecutors against John T. Earnest.   Earnest attacked a synagogue near San Diego last month on the last day of Passover, killing one and wounding three others.  He also admits to setting a fire at a mosque weeks earlier and one of the hate crime charges relates to that incident.

The US Attorney says he will consult with the synagogue victims before deciding on whether to ask for the death penalty in the case.
