NEWS SUMMARY-INTELLIGENCE REPORT FRIDAY 5/17-SATURDAY 5/18/2019  (LIMITED VACATION EDITION NEWSDUMP)

Syria reported objects being fired in the direction of Damascus late Friday night.


The objects came from the direction of the Israeli controlled Golan Heights with some shot down and some said to have hit targets.


The Syrian Defense Ministry called the incident a:


'foreign attack"




The talk inside Washington is that Iran is "highly likely" to have been involved in the reported sabotage of four commercial ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.


An unnamed high-ranking official is quoted by Reuters News Agency as saying that Iran:


"should de-escalate and come to negotiations"
 


Tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Mexico are being lifted.    That word from Washington Friday.   The tariffs an impediment to moving forward on the new USMCA tri-national trade agreement forward.

The United States got the cooperation of the countries neighboring it to help prevent cheap metal imports from China from being dumped into North America.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared at a steel plant in Hamilton, Ontario Friday hailing the lifting of tariffs as good news for his country.


Results from Australia's General Election Saturday morning Eastern US time.  Polling pointed to a House of Representatives win for the opposition Labor Party led by Bill Shorten.   The ruling Liberal/National coalition of Prime Minister Scott Morrison losing in the pre-election polls.   151 seats at stake in the House.

BUT THE RESULTS AS THEY CAME IN GAVE THE COALITION 74 SEATS AT LAST COUNT WITH LABOR AT 66 AND OTHER PARTIES GETTING SIX SEATS.   THE FINAL RESULTS DIFFERED FROM THE OPINION POLLS.

Neither major party will win a majority in the 76 seat Senate where seats are allocated differently and minor parties will see success there.

Conservative British Prime Minister Theresa May and Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn backing away from cross-party talks to move May's controversial Brexit plan through.

Supporters of both parties displeased with what's going on and Corbyn coming out with a letter Friday to announce the end of talks, talking about the "weakness and instability" of Mrs. May''s government.

President Trump met at the White House Thursday with Swiss President Ueli Maurer.   Switzerland represents the US in Iran diplomatically.

The White House said that both Iran and Venezuela were discussed by the two leaders with the Swiss president indicating a willingness to mediate matters related to both countries.


Week 27 of the Yellow Vests Saturday with yellow jacketed protest in Paris and across the country.   Organizers pointing to major protests in Rheims and Nancy Saturday which usually means anarchists in black will show up in the midst of the yellow jacketed demonstrators and seek confrontation and or damage property in those two cities.

In France voters go to the polls a week from Sunday with public opinion polls indicating a close race between President Emmanuel Macron's party (La Republic Em Marche-LaREM) and that of Marine Le Pen (National Rally-RN) for France's seats in the European Parliament.

Its 24 percent RN versus 23 percent for LaREM with fears being expressed that voters from other parties will drift to the major parties at the end.    One report notes that 17 percent of the voters for leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon's France Insubordinate party admire Le Pen.

This week a France Insubordinate elected official in eastern France endorsed Le Pen's National Rally and had lunch with her.

No weekly Palestinian protest in Gaza this Friday.   Heat, Ramadan and Saturday night's Eurovision song contest in Israel cited as reasons for cancellation.    Israel has allowed cash infusions from Qatar into Hamas ruled Gaza to pacify the situation.
