Voters in the majority of European countries at the polls Sunday to choose the 751 seats for the European Parliament which plays a mainly advisory role to a powerful European Union bureaucracy in Brussels.

Other European countries voted earlier and voters in the UK went to the polls Thursday.

The results emerging Sunday evening Eastern US time with a new populist coalition led by Italy's Matteo Salvini and France's Marine Le Pen anticipating taking a significant share of the parliament's seats.

But "mainstream" parties remain dominant in the EU Parliament.

The French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner tweeted at 412 am Eastern  US time Monday that a suspect in the package bombing in Lyon Friday that injured 13 people has been arrested.    He is simply identified as a 24 year old man.


The French authorities are continuing their their investigation into Friday's bomb blast.    They were able to release additional pictures of the masked suspect who dropped the package bomb near a bakery and rode off in a bicycle.

Anti-terrorism police and prosecutors involved in the investigation but no willingness on the part of government officials to call the bombing terrorism.

Traces of an explosive (TATP) used in previous Islamic terrorist attacks in France and Belgium have been found.

Jews in Germany are being warned by the country's anti-Semitism commissioner not to wear head coverings (kippas) that identify them as Jews.

Felix Klein said he has changed his opinion on the matter in light of increased attacks on Jews in Germany.   There were 62 physical attacks on Jews in Germany in 2018, up from 37 in 2017.

Israel's President Reuven Rivlin says the recommendation is an admission:


"......that, again, Jews are not safe in Germany"

In Berlin Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal urging Jews to wear their kippas.

Israeli politics with one of the leading politicians on the Right, Avigdor Lieberman, balking at joining in a coalition government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Defense Minister.

Lieberman wants a law on drafting young Israelis into military service passed over the objections of religious parties who are an important component of any new government  that Mr. Netanyahu wants to form.

A vote is set for Monday afternoon in Israel's Parliament that may set the future course of events that may include a new election.


Opponents of Prime Minister Netanyahu rallied Saturday night led by top officials of the Labor Party, Meretz Party and the main opposition force, the Blue and White Party.

Former television anchorman and No. 2 in Blue and White Yair Lapid made reference to Turkey's President Erdogan:


"There won't be a Turkish dictator here"



Lapid hitting hard at Netanyahu as the Prime Minister is pushing for laws that would insulate him from the consequences of indictment on charges in three corruption cases.   A pre-indictment hearing is now set for the beginning of October with indictments anticipated shortly afterwards against Mr. Netanyahu.

In northwestern Syria the fighting for the town of Kafr Nabudah has been fierce after the Syrian army took it from jihadist opposition forces for a second time.   The jihadists launched a failed counterattack according to the Syrian side.      More from this pro-Syrian government Twitter feed....LINK
