NEXTRUSH UNPLUGGED: THROUGH THE NIGHT

(OPENING SEGMENT)

A song recorded in 1941 but at the top of the popular music hits on June 6, 1944 D-Day that's because the record company Columbia was up against the musicians strike that began in July 1942 and still affected both Columbia and RCA records.

Dick Haymes had become a very popular singer in 1944 and some music companies were in agreement with the American Federation of Musicians like Decca and the new upstart Capitol.

So Columbia dug up the old record with Dick Haymes on it and put it out there.

Here in the USA nation being wearied by two plus years of war looked with hope towards the impending invasion hoping to speed the war to its end.

A necessary war necessitated by the First World War.

There had been a false alarm sent out by a news service some days before so caution was expected to be exercised.

The cutting edge of media in 1944 was radio and radio networks like CBS stayed on past 1 am in the East, the normal sign off time, in expectation of the big news.

It was just after 1230 am on June 6th in the Eastern US when the first wire copy with bells clanging on the machines (66 words typed out per minute onto paper) spurted out.

An enemy news agency (German) said the invasion had begun.

The story was broadcast with the disclaimer that an "enemy source" was the source of the report and it was back to the regular program, the music of the big bands played in the late night hours with live performances broadcast.

It took until 332 am for a shortwave broadcast from London specially arranged for the occasion to broadcast a statement over the radio networks that the invasion had begun which would be followed by a message pre-recorded by General Dwight Eisenhower as well.....

The audio files of D-Day radio for 24 hours or so are at this link.....

Good Thursday morning from here and I was reading about Yellow Vests figure Eric Drouet being prosecuted for involvement in organizing "undeclared" protests in Paris and the latest is that the Paris prosecutors have come up with a four month suspended sentence and a 575 dollar or so fine as his lawyers have appealed plans for a harsher sentence.

Drouet said he was the "organizer" as alleged by the authorities.

I was reading Yellow Vests figure Jerome Rodrigues in French on his Twitter page and he appears to be tweeting about something for Saturday June 22nd in terms of protest with the notion of a blockade of some sort.

The authorities in Australia said to be undecided on charging reporters with crimes following yesterday's raids in separate cases on a reporter's home in Canberra and the headquarters of the ABC in Sydney.

Concern for a democratic society being able to operate under such circumstances.

A commentary and analysis on the situation has been published on the ABC's website.

Coming to the end of the line.

Its summertime and things will be different on the blog but the posts will continue one way or another, that's for sure.

An election today in the UK in the Peterborough constituency in the House of Commons with the Brexit Party in contention.   Another breakthrough perhaps in the making for Nigel Farage's new party.

62 percent voted to leave in this marginally Labor Party seat but its a new ballgame in British politics with the failure of the big parties to deliver Brexit as voted in 2016 in the referendum.

Should have results nine or ten pm tonight in the Eastern US.......

Already an election in Denmark with the Social Democrats winning and they took a tough stance on immigration to help them get to the win.     The BBC reports their version of the story...BBC-DENMARK ELECTION
