YELLOW VESTS GATHER IN PARIS JUNE 4, 2022
Policing and security became an issue in France this week as the first round of voting in the legislative elections approaches (a week from tomorrow on June 12th).
The treatment of English soccer fans around and near the Stade de France in suburban Paris last Saturday night front and center this week.
President Emmanuel Macron speaking of the need for an investigation and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin putting out an apology to Liverpool fans who got locked out of the stadium amidst fears about what were said to be fake tickets for the contest with Real Madrid.
Macron using an interview with regional media in France Friday to express his dismay at what happened last Saturday night to football (soccer) fans.
Political opposition on the Left and Right seizing on the stadium policing issue to attack the government's handling of it.
Polling data continuing to pour out showing a close contest in the first round between the "Ensemble" coalition supporting President Macron and the NUPES (New People's Ecologic And Social Union) that unifies most of the "Left" in France.
The National Rally trails in the first round vote and the "Old Right" Le Republicains show up with around 10 to 12 percent of the popular vote in the first round.
In the second round on June 19th a closing of ranks by the other parties expected to prevent National Rally candidates from winning seats but the RN should get between 25-50 of the 577 seats in the National Assembly up from their current eight.
What is interesting in one of the latest polls (Elabe May 30-June 1) is the notion that the "Ensemble" coalition of Macron may fall short of the 289 seats needed to command a majority in the National Assembly...WIKIPEDIA 2022 FRENCH LEGISLATIVE ELECTION POLLS
It would be pure speculation but if that happens the "Old Right" Les Republicains likely to help Macron govern it has become increasingly obvious that their inclination is to support Macron although they try to project the notion of being an opposition force. Popular support for the LR steadily disintegrating during the Macron presidency.
This was evidenced by the poor showing of LR presidential candidate Valerie Pecresse in April's presidential contest.
