NEWS SUMMARY-INTELLIGENCE REPORT MONDAY 10/7/2019  THE TRUMP TURKEY-SYRIA-KURDISH POLICY TURN INCLUDING COMMENT, ANALYSIS

(LIMITED SERVICE THROUGH LATE MONDAY)

Reaction coming in to the late Sunday night announcement from the White House about a Turkish military operation in northeastern Syria.

The announcement read in part:

"Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into northern Syria.    The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the Isis territorial 'Caliphate', will no longer be in the immediate area"

The statement also said Turkey would take responsibility for foreigners suspected of being ISIS fighters being held in the Kurdish zone and noted the unwillingness of other countries to imprison them.

The statement followed a phone conversation earlier in the day between President Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A spokesman for the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces Kino Gabriel said:

"There were assurances from the United States of America that it would not allow any Turkish military operations against the region.   The (US) statement was a surprise and we can say that it is a stab in the back for the SDF"

A five tweet series from President Trump this morning saying among other things it was time to bring US soldiers home from "ridiculous Endless Wars".

US Senator Lindsey Graham disagreeing with the decision saying Iran will be a big winner because of it.

Other so-called "neocons" in on the criticism like Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

(ANALYSIS-COMMENT)

The White House statement late Sunday night creates a news story that distracts from the political drama of the "impeachment inquiry" in Washington.

But it can also be interpreted as a move against the intelligence-defense community which appears to be the epicenter of efforts to bring down President Trump since his election in 2016.      These "deep state" elements also support the Kurds as allies in a Syria policy designed to oppose the rule of Bashar Assad.

A policy that is explained away by the need to fight against ISIS with the use of the Kurds and the presence of US troops in Syria.    ISIS is a group that is very much a byproduct of the Washington Establishment's anti-Assad war policy of the last eight years.

The President is not withdrawing US troops from Syria entirely anyway.    They will be thicker and more present near the Iraq border with Syria with many suspecting US action to destabilize that country's government is underway.

The President also creating wiggle room to reverse course a bit in his twitter storm during the day.   His words "totally obliterate and destroy the Economy of Turkey" if the Turks do anything "off limits" give him that ability to shift course in the future.

More wiggling from the President with a threat in case any harm comes to US forces from the Turks during their military operation.

Not much of a Turkish military operation so far but a good information operation from the White House in the last 24 hours to distract from the political drama being generated against the President by the mainstream media.
