Music from South Africa fits the moment we find ourselves in this weekend and so Hugh Masakela and Miriam Makeba followed by Four Jacks and a Jill who all contributed to the popular music scene in the late 1960's.
South Africa was the place where around the turn of the 20th Century the first institutions known at "concentration camps" were established by the once mighty British Empire. According to Wikipedia some 26-thousand white South Africans and 14-thousand black South Africans died in these places.
Out of that experience embittered whites eventually formed a "Reformed National Party" that came to rule in the era of apartheid followed by the rule of the black majority and the dominance of one party, the African National Congress.
Israel worked with South Africa on nuclear weapons development in the 1970's a test explosion on an island off its coast the National Party government united with Israel sharing a common past.
And then there's the Holocaust and much has been told about it and presented about it but we've forgotten a key concept.

We know the South African experience but are we considering the Israeli experience and its consequences.

That's the story from Press TV in Iran today where Qasem Soleimani played an important role in organizing the PMU forces to fight ISIS and stop their advance on Baghdad.
His funeral procession along with that of the PMU Deputy Commander attended by Iraq's Prime Minister and a throng of Iraqis.
Tass notes that the Russian Defense Ministry is highlighting General Soleimani's efforts against ISIS in Syria as well....

NEWSDUMP UPDATE-KNIFE ATTACKER IN FRANCE RECENT CONVERT TO ISLAM
The initial reporting on the 22 year old French man who killed one and wounded two others Friday afternoon at Villejuif ("Jewish Settlement") in the Greater Paris area spoke of mental issues and that the attacker told witnesses he had run out of his medication.
Now there is reporting that "Nathan" as he has been identified had a Koran in his possession and a letter.
The reporting by BFM-TV in part translates this way:
"He has also converted to Islam recently. In his backpack, found after his crime, a testamentary letter made reference to the Muslim religion and adjoined a Koran. But no trace of radicalism has been noted for the moment in its course during the last time preceding the drama"
The news report also says that for the moment the anti-terrorist police are not investigating the case.
ADDITIONAL LATE NEWS ON THIS STORY IS THAT COUNTER-TERRORISM PROSECUTORS ARE TAKING OVER THE STABBING ATTACK CASE.
PLUS ADDITIONAL LATE NEWS ON THIS CASE IS THAT THE ATTACKER SPARED THE LIFE OF A PERSON WHO RECITED A MUSLIM PRAYER.
The attacker was shot dead by police.

There was once an Operation Desert Shield starting after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.
Saudi Arabia flooded with US military assets and personnel.
Those same combat ready units of the 82nd Airborne on the move like they are now....
One US soldier found himself standing guard with a Saudi soldier and shared a picture of his wife. The Saudi soldier was taken aback and distrubed. The woman was not covered properly, her hair, her body etc. etc.
The land of Saudi Arabia, the land of the holiest cities of Islam Mecca and Medina, was invaded by "infidels".
For people like Obama Bin Laden, who fought for the US cause in the name of Islam in Afghanistan, this was a horrible development.
You see, the Saudi brand of Sunni Islam, Wahabbi Islam, is strict and legalistic to the nth degree.
The US military was even "sensitive" to it as you might recall the women who accompanied Bob Hope for his Christmas tour in 1989 kept out of Saudi Arabia, the lyrics of Christmas carols banned from Armed Forces Radio, women soldiers told to dress modestly and so on.
The US deployment to the Middle East shook the faithful to their core and some organized against the infidels.
Bin Laden starting up an organization called Al Qaeda.
We get to September 11th just ahead but lets take time out to consider what happened a month ago Monday. In the aftermath of the Friday December 6th attack I posted this inside the December 7th post near the end.
"The Saudi air force officer shot by police following his deadly shooting attack that killed three and wounded eight at the Pensacola Naval Air Station Friday hosted a dinner party to watch mass shooting videos.
That's what's been told to the Associated Press by a "US official briefed on the situation.
Two other Saudis training at the military base are said to have watched the attack from a car. Other Saudis at the base are said to be unaccounted for.
The attacker, Mohammed Saeed Alshamrami, is reported to have posted on his now supended Twitter page material that echoed Osama Bin Laden."

Well at least the news is about impeachment now, the subject has definitely been changed, Mr. President. Maybe you wanted it that way.
Is Trumpiavelli at work again? The civilians told to get out, will the military in Iraq follow. Trump can claim a victory "I got the troops out of Iraq". The parliament in Iraq is supposed to vote to kick the US military out of the country.
AND THEN CAME 9/11.......
Indeed the most infamous act of terrorism in history masterminded by a Saudi, Osama bin Laden, with 15 of the 19 hijackers of the four airliners citizens of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Saudi citizens in the USA were flown out in spite of the ban on air flights following the attacks including relatives of Bin Laden.
How to deal with 9/11. Afghanistan was the safe house for Al Qaeda provided by the Taliban who came up out of Pakistan supported by that country's intelligence agency (ISI) to seize power. It was located on Iran's eastern border.
And the US went in with other countries under UN approval (International Security and Assistance Force) and we are still there talking to the Taliban on and off again to cut a deal to get the US military out.
Osama bin Laden was able to get out to Pakistan and live in a military garrison town (Abbotabad) where he was targeted on orders of President Barack Obama in 2011. Obama facing re-election the next year.
There's plenty of evidence that the US went after an organization called Al Qaeda and its offshoots etc. etc. but what about the Sunni Muslim masses of the Arabian peninsula and beyond who these organizations recruited. Young men who could provide an army to kill Americans, Europeans, Israelis etc. etc.
But lets see what happened instead of action against Saudi Arabia following 9/11. The target became Saudi Arabia's enemy from the Gulf War Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Saddam was also an enemy of Israel. Iraq on Iran's western border.
This the beginning of what would become a difficult war where US military forces would pay a price with killed, wounded and those impacted by issues like PTSD.
One thing I remember noticing and hearing about was the killing of the US military by Improvised Explosive Devices linked to Iran.
I asked myself why action was not taken against Iran by then President George W. Bush and I see two reasons why.
Reason One. By 2006 and 2007 the Democrats had gained in the Senate and won control of the House but most importantly public opinion was weary of the war in Iraq not to mention Afganistan and would not handle more conflict.
Reason Two. Another strategy was emerging inside the beltway and in other places like Israel to deal with Iran that did not involve the open use of US or Israeli military force. Covert operations-cyber warfare and other tactics.
The jihadists inspired by Saudi Arabia's theology-ideology would be recruited to wage war to reorder the map of the Middle East in favor of the interests of Saudi Arabia, the United States and Israel. Their potential threat would be diverted so that they would end up helping the very people they often hated and despised.
They were recruited to fight "for God" when they were really doing the bidding of those they considered "Satan".
This strategy would manifest itself in Libya and Syria in 2011 during the presidency of Barack Obama with big cheerleaders in the persons of Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton for regime change in both countries.

Its the new sheriff in Harney County, Oregon, Dan Jenkins, sworn in on January 2nd.
Jenkins replacing Dave Ward, who was sheriff during the Oregon Standoff protest in 2016. Ward saying money was a problem when it came to funding policing in this very poor county that once had vibrant industries like timber and ranching before the federal government moved in to assert control over the land it already owned and hurt the local non-government economy.
The former sheriff Dave Ward very much a party to the federal intervention in Harney County to suppress the Oregon Standoff protest. Ward involved in the deadly operation that killed LaVoy Finicum on January 26th, 2016.

BREAKING NEWS-LIBYA AIR STRIKE
As Turkey looks to intervene with its military in the Libyan conflict to support the Government of National Accord against the Egyptian backed Libyan National Army a deadly airstrike killing at least 28 at a military training school in GNA controlled Tripoli late today.

That mess in Libya as we pick up the story of how we got to where we are with Iran. In 2011 French air power delivered the first blows against the forces of Muammar Gaddafi and the US and UK and others involved. On the ground the jihadists rolled in to fight in a war heartily supported by Hillary Rodham Clinton with some ugly consequences for Libyans and Americans at Benghazi.
Follow the money here but almost on the heels of Libya came the story of Syria and the massive jihadist campaign unleashed there. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others pouring in the cash and the killers, the admirers of Osama bin Laden, the killers, the rapists etc. etc.
Peter Hitchens put this into a blog post in September 2018:
"The huge Sunni Muslim oil power, Saudi Arabia, armed and/or backed diplomatically by Britain, France and the USA is ever more hostile to Shia Iran, another oil power not as great but still as important, which is close and growing closer to Russia and China..."
And so these lines would be drawn in Syria's Civil War with Iran and Russia helping Syria's ruler Bashar Assad resist the jihadists of Saudi Arabia.
Things got bad and they got worse as the jihadist cancer morphed into a super cancer called "Daesh" by the locals but known to many of us as ISIS. A brutal band of killers, rapists, pillagers even worse than the run of the mill jihadists.
The military expertise of Soleimani, the Iranian general, and Russian officers and so on along with Russian airpower would be brought into the fray.
And eventually we would have a President of the United States who did the sword dance in Saudi Arabia in May 2017 raging against Bashar Assad and his allies as killers and users of chemical weapons to kill children.

tweet over the alleged attack in Douma standing out among others and not too many days ago the claim that the offensive against the jihadist bin Ladenists in northwestern Syria's Idlib are involved in a campaign of mass murder.
Now back to Iran more and more the notion of Iran as a nuclear threat and the Obama approach was an international agreement known with the JCPOA acronym (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action). Obama got it through the US Senate run by Republicans with Senator Bob Corker involved (notice how quickly his political career ended).
The plan rigged for one-third of the Senate to vote and approve it so 62 Senators could look good and oppose it. Money for US business doing business with Iran in the lifting of sanctions under JCPOA.
Israel very upset by this and opposed with its campaign of computer viruses, assassinations of nuclear scientists etc. etc. well underway in the 2005-2015 window and Barack Obama chiding them over JCPOA etc. etc.
But moving away from Israel take note that when the Saudi king died in 2015 Barack Obama was slow to show up for mourning and took heat for it. Joe Biden got there ahead of him. Biden and foreign money again?
But in just a few years Donald J. Trump would walk away from the JCPOA nuclear agreement and impose sanctions on Iran. The guy who did the dance in Saudi Arabia.

Well Pearl Harbor but who fired the first shot in 2020, who started it. Japan chose the path of violence under pressure from economic sanctions from the USA.
Iran has been put under pressure in recent years in multiple ways from the increasingly harsh economic sanctions of the United States.
Israel intervening in Syria's civil war to hit Iranian targets inside of Syria that were helping Assad fight the jihadists and ISIS.
No doubt the hope of both to force Iran to respond with violence, to do some sort of Pearl Harbor in revenge.
Street protests emerging in both Lebanon and Iraq in recent months where there are powerful pro-Iranian forces in the existing governments.
Ever increasing pressure from the enemies of Iran then last Friday a pro-Iran militia hit an Iraqi base and killed an American civilian defense contractor.
Then last Sunday night the US hit on Iraqi militia bases, then on Tuesday the protest that threatened the US Embassy followed by the killing of the Iranian general and Iraqi militia leader early Friday morning.
Was that attack designed to trigger a violent response from Iran and its proxies to get the "Pearl Harbor" if you will?

No official word yet on who's responsible but an apparent hack of a federal government website tonight with the homepage defaced showing an image of President Trump bleeding from his mouth with an Iranian Revolutionary Guard fist in his face.
There are reports that an Iranian hack group is claiming responsibility for the hack.

Anti-war protests around the world today in response to the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani urging the US not to wage war against Iraq......
Democrat Congresswoman and Presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard posted a video on Twitter saying that the killing ordered by President Trump was an "act of war" and puts the United States into a "state of war" with Iran without Congress declaring war.

Gabbard called for US troops to be pulled out of Syria and Iraq otherwise the US will be dragged deeper into conflict with Iran.
As mortars landed in Baghdad's "Green Zone" where the US Embassy is located tonight President Trump tweeted that 52 Iranian sites have been "targeted".

Iraqi militia warning members of the Iraqi military to stay away from US military on Iraqi bases. A Popular Mobilization Unit deputy commander killed along with the Iranian general in the early Friday morning drone strike.
The US military suspending training of Iraqi military at bases in Iraq.
In Iran's holy city of Qom for the first time ever a large red flag unfurled above the Jamkaran Mosque symbolizing blood being spilled unjustly and a call for that blood to be avenged.
Early Sunday morning before dawn the body of Qasem Soleimani, promoted to Lieutenant General after his death, arrived in Iran at the Ahvaz airport for the beginning of what is being called a :"cross country funeral".
Is President Trump hoping for a de-escalation and some deal after this action?
That remains to be seen. The foreign minister of Qatar who is to said to be mediating for the US en route to Tehran.
Commentary on the "Moon of Alabama" website suggests the Iranian response will be further down the road, not immediate, and be proportionate to the targeted killing of Soleimani....LINK
The Iraqi parliament is still set to consider a law to remove US troops from the country which may happen Sunday.
The UK planning to use two warships to escort its merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Congress has been formally notified of the operation to kill General Soleimani early Friday morning Iraq time with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying the letter "raises more questions than it answers".
For now that's a picture of the way it really is tonight.
