In a major setback government proposed immigration legislation was rejected in a National Assembly vote today.
The vote 270-265 against the government.
The combined opposition majority in the assembly finding enough votes to offer a rebuke to President Emmanuel Macron's government led by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.
The scapegoat for the failing vote Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin with National Rally President Jordan Bardella calling on him to resign.
A similar call for his resignation from the Left.
Mr. Darmanin said to have offered his resignation to President Macron tonight but it was turned down.
Darmanin told TF 1 television the opposition parties are ganging up to prevent the government from providing protection to the French people.
National Rally leader in the National Assembly Marine Le Pen said the proposed law would have led to an influx of migrants into France.
The immigration legislation in France's National Assembly this week was watered down in committee after Senate passage.
Many legislators were upset with the plan Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne indicating the government is not inclined to force passage of the legislation if it lacks a majority.
