As political forces ostensibly opposed to President Emmanuel Macron failed to use their majority to censure his government this week Macron pushed forward advocating for "reform" of pensions in France as a means to cut government spending.

Appearing on "France 2" government television Wednesday Macron was adamant that a mechanism must be found to spend less money on pensions by raising the retirement age or by negotiating larger worker contributions to France's pension system.

When the final push comes in the National Assembly this issue has the potential to unite opposing forces but the certainty of opposition unity seemed to fall apart this week.

There were two censure motions on the government with one proposed by the National Rally supported by its assembly members then in a surprise the censure motion of the "Left" union called "Nupes" was supported by the National Rally.

239 of the 577 National Assembly members united in censure of the government.

But the 60 or so members of "Les Republicans" France's "Mainstream" party of the "Right" opted not to support the censure preventing a majority from being achieved.

National Rally leader in the assembly Marine Le Pen noting their abstention as proof of "Les Republicains" secret support for Macron's agenda.

The government again used its Article 49.3 power this week to override the National Assembly and pass a Social Security budget without a National Assembly vote.

Censure resolutions put out again with the "Left" failing to unite this time its Socialist, Green and Communist factions did not want a censure resolution on the table that might be supported by the National Rally.

This meant that only Jean-Luc Melenchon's LFI faction of the "Left" endorsed censuring the government.
