An Iranian oil tanker is on the move leaving the British territory of Gibraltar more than one month after it was seized.
Gibraltar earlier rejected a US request to detain the Iranian tanker that it decided to free. The US Justice Department issued a warrant Friday to seize the "Grace 1" claiming it was transporting oil to Syria in violation of sanctions.
The local authorities in the British territory cited adherence to European Union sanctions on Iran, which are different from the US ones.
Gibraltar decided to allow the tanker to leave its waters Sunday night and has said it had promises from Iran that no oil would be delivered to Syria.
But Iran's foreign ministry says it has made no such promises.
In addition, the tanker is now flying the Iranian flag and has been renamed the "Adrian Darya 1" with Iran saying it is prepared to use its navy to protect the ship.
