Well, here we are again your host with you a holiday weekend here Independence Day on Tuesday and yes, it's summertime.

WHEN REPUBLICANS AND LIBERALS TEAMED UP TO DENY FREEDOM OF SPEECH 50 YEAR AGO
It all started in the middle of the 1960's when the usual laundry list of liberal groups challenged the ownership of a radio station owned by an outspoken conservative religious broadcaster who supported Republican Barry Goldwater for President in 1964.
They challenged Philadelphia Area Radio Station WXUR (690 AM , 100.3 FM) over the usual stuff what folks nowadays call "extremism" and "hate speech".
But in the end Dr. Carl McIntire would lose his radio license on "Fairness Doctrine" grounds during the Republican Administration of Richard Nixon.

McIntire was being punished by the Nixon GOP machine for opposing Nixon's efforts to cut a peace deal to end the Vietnam War.
McIntire grew up during World War I and was a younger adult during World War II he carried the Progressive Patriotic Notions of America winning its wars as communicated by Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt.
His "March for Victory" rallies drew some big crowds into Washington DC and at one point Nixon's National Security Adviser Dr. Henry Kissinger had to scramble to Paris to prevent Vietnam's Vice-President Nugyen Cao Ky from coming to Washington to speak to one of these rallies.
And so it came down to this final broadcast I remember hearing back then then being right before Midnight on July 5th, 1973 contrary to what the video says the actual broadcast on it took place right before Midnight July 5th, 1973...

I was a groupie of Carl McIntire's as a teenager but indeed he moved on and I moved on his ego big like so many religious broadcasters he died isolated and alone in 2002.
But at this moment in history Carl McIntire stood as the symbol of First Amendment Freedom of Speech and there were many on his side in those days people like former CBS News President and Edward R. Murrow associate Fred Friendly and the Radio-Television News Directors Association all seeing themselves as potential next targets of Nixon's FCC.
Also on the side of Carl McIntire's Right to Free Speech Sol Taishoff the owner and editor of "Broadcasting" Magazine who saw the Fairness Doctrine in its 1930's beginnings as a political weapon fashioned by Democrat Franklin Roosevelt's FCC to silence FDR's opposition.

Back in the 1990s when Rush Limbaugh had his TV program, the death of the Fairness Doctrine had occurred. Rush displayed a special letter he had received from the former President Nixon saying he was also glad that Fairness Doctrine was history. That it had been used to squash dissent and that Nixon had also used it to his advantage.
ReplyDeleteI am not aware of that which you speak of. What I am aware of is that Dr. Carl McIntire received what amounted to a letter of apology from Charles Colson who was White House Counsel for Nixon. This happened in the mid 1970's when Colson was a "convert" to Evangelical Christianity.
