The Commandant of the United States Marine Corps General Eric Smith says the Marines aim to shut down the sea lanes coming out of China in any conflict.
Smith says this will be accomplished by dispersal of forces from the islands south of Japan to Australia.
He also says the efforts of Marines will be in conjunction with other branches of the US military.
