Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the "Conservative" Peoples Party says he wants the tone of rhetoric about COVID policy to be less combative.
By March all Austrians 14 years and older with the exception of pregnant women and those who cannot vaccinate for rare medical reasons are expected to get the jabs.
Effective today all unvaccinated Austrians are in lockdown not allowed to enter public places in general and businesses not considered essential among other things.
One of his own cabinet ministers Elisabeth Kostinger said that Herbert Kickl leader of the nationalist anti-mass immigration Freedom Party, the main political player in opposition to forced vaccinations, has "blood on his hands".
Mr. Nehammer says he wants to talk with those he calls "insecure citizens" and urges people to talk with their doctors. His message seems to echo those given by Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity last summer.
Nehammer's comments follow a mass display of opposition to coerced vaccination on Austria's streets over the weekend.
Protests in seven cities drew by official estimates more than 82,000 people in a nation of nine million. That's equivalent to more than 3,034,000 protesting on the streets of the United States. Unofficial estimates place the protest numbers even higher than that.
In response to Mr. Nehammer, Mr. Kickl called on him to back down from both compulsory vaccination and the lockdown of the unvaccinated.
