SYRIA LATEST:  ISRAEL BEEFS UP BORDER, CREATES 'SECURITY ZONE' FOR JIHADISTS, OFFENSIVE CONTINUES

"Israel by this statement marks out a security zone based on the 1974 disengagement lines for accommodating the tens of thousands of Syrian refugees massing on its borders as well as rebel forces retreating from Quneitra.  This zone covers 235 sq. km between southern Golan and Mt. Hermon...."

Israel cancelled a security cabinet meeting planned tonight to discuss 'preparations for war' but increased the strength of its forces on the Golan Heights border with Syria.

(One reason for cancellation may have been a meeting between Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu where Israel's concerns over Iranian involvement in Syria were presented.)

Additional tanks and artillery have been sent in.   Humanitarian assistance sent into Syria beginning late last week will continue, Israel says.  But PM Benjamin Netanyahu told the regular cabinet meeting Sunday that refugees will not be allowed to cross the border.

Israel has called for strict adherence to a 1974 agreement on disengagement between Syria and Israel in the Golan. that created an area of disengagement to be patrolled by UN observers.

Israel's move is to provide a zone of protection for refugees now in the border area and any anti-Syrian government forces retreating into it from the government's current offensive nearby.

From the Syrian side there's word of additional Syrian military action on the west side of Deraa around the town of Tafas  where the government claims militants are preventing a reconciliation agreement between opposition forces and the government.

They say the US backed Free Syrian Army units there have aligned themselves with an ISIS affiliated force.

Various sources report more than a dozen Syrian and Russian airstrikes there today.

Tafas lies between Deraa city to the southeast and the Quneitra region along the Israeli-Golan border to the northwest.
