BREAKING NEWS:   GERMANY'S INTERIOR MINISTER OFFERS RESIGNATION IN MIGRANT ROW WITH ANGELA MERKEL

(SPECIAL UPDATE AT 9AM EASTERN JULY 2ND:  THE MAKE OR BREAK MEETING BETWEEN SEEHOFER AND MERKEL IS SET FOR 11AM EASTERN-5 PM IN GERMANY)

The German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has confirmed tonight that he is offering his resignation as Interior Minister and leader of Bavaria's Christian Social Union Party.

Seehofer was in crisis talks that went late into Sunday night in Germany with CSU leaders and coming out he said he would seek one more meeting with Merkel Monday to avert his resignations.

Merkel had reaffirmed an open border policy to migrants when she met with Seehofer on Saturday while Seehofer insists Germany needs to close its southern border to the migrants.

Seehofer told German media:

"In the interest of this country and the capacity of this government, which we want to maintain, we want to make an attempt to find an agreement on this central question of turning people away....Everything else will be decided afterward."

Seehofer's party provides 46 seats in the 709 seat parliament with Merkel's  Christian Democratic Union 200 seats and the Social Democratic Party 153 seats.   Minus the CSU Merkel's government would have just short of a majority (353 of 709 seats) in the parliament.
