US State Department Statement May 25th, 2018
Its being called "Operation Basalt", a Syrian government offensive in the South-Southwest of Syria near Jordan and Israel's Golan Heights. The operation is to drive out opposition jihadist forces and Islamic State elements occupying the territory.
The United States has warned against the operation and Israel has put out word claiming Iranians are operating in the regions close to the Golan while Russia in recent weeks said they have disengaged Iranians from areas close to the border.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Jordan's King Abdullah today (Monday June 18th) to discuss regional matters with Israel stressing an Iranian threat, a threat that would justify Israeli military intervention in the region in opposition to the imminent Syrian offensive.
The United States has already sent two warnings, the May 25th one along with one last Thursday (June 14th) speaking of "firm and appropriate measures" to any Syrian "violations" in the de-escalation zone where the offensive is about to be launched.
The Trump Administration announced funding will resume for the "White Helmets" last Thursday as well. The "White Helmets" are called a "humanitarian group" by the US and UK, but the Syrian government says they are people who create false flag "chemical attacks" in Syria.
In February President Trump, who has tweeted against Syria's ruler Bashar Assad as "Animal Assad" twice condemned Russia, Syria and Iran for what they have done in Syria calling it a "disgrace" even as he said the only reason for the US to be in Syria is ISIS.
