                   NEWS SUMMARY AT THIS HOUR



President Donald Trump says he will announce his Supreme Court nominee on July 9th, giving the President a week or more to consider who will replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the high court.   Trump told reporters on Air Force One he had narrowed the choice down to about five candidates, including two women.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told President Trump by phone that Canada had no choice but to impose retaliatory tariffs on steel, aluminum and some consumer goods.    The Canadian government says its prepared to spend two billion dollars to support industries impacted by United States tariffs on Canadian goods.

Comcast customers experienced a major service outage today impacting tens of millions of customers across the country.   Here in southcentral Pennsylvania impact of the service outage was felt during the afternoon hours from 130 to 430pm.  Comcast tweeted Friday evening that it was working to restore service.    Comcast said that a partner company had a fiber cut which it believes impacted Comcast service.

The European Union says its reached agreement on a common policy to deal with migrants entering Europe that will include what are called "secure centers" to house migrants along with attempts to create "migrant centers" outside of Europe where people can apply to enter the EU.   The agreement came after an emergency EU summit in Brussels and on paper it seems to resemble policies adopted by the United States and Australia.

European Union President Donald Tusk is warning the British government that time is running out for an agreement on Brexit.   The EU leader will meet British Prime Minister Theresa May next Friday with many major issues still unresolved.  The EU appears to be squeezing the British government which has many supporters of the EU within its cabinet where there is still no unanimous agreement on the UK's future relationship with the EU.

Alternative for Germany co-leader Alice Weidel is offering the Christian Social Union party a coalition deal in the German state of Bavaria following elections this October.   The CSU is lagging in opinion polls and will probably fall short of a majority in the 180 seat state parliament.   The AFD, with its strong opposition to migrant entry into Germany, is polling at around 13 percent and would be able to provide a substantial number of seats to support a new government if the polling numbers hold.

There are reports that the Syrian government and the jihadist opposition in the southwestern part of the country are about to reach a reconciliation agreement.   This would bring major portions of Syria near the borders of Israel and Jordan under government control.   An agreement would follow days of fighting in the region after the government launched a major offensive backed by Russian air power.

And journalists are honoring their fallen comrades, the five killed at the offices of the "Capital Gazette" newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland when a man opened fire into the building Thursday.   This Sunday's Portland, Oregonian newspaper will include "Honoring the Captial Gazette Continuing Our Mission" on its front page masthead with a ribbon printed in the middle of the phrase.
