This protest aimed at the austere budget plan of President Emmanuel Macron's government led by Prime Minister Francois Bayrou.
Leftist political leader Jean-Luc Melenchon supporting the protest and calling for it to be held in conjunction with an effort to censure the government in the National Assembly.
Successful censure of the government is possible if the Left and Right can put down differences to vote in unison. Such a move expected to lead to a new legislative election.
