YELLOW VESTS PROTEST IN PARIS SATURDAY JULY 19, 2025

France's budget rollout this week came on the day after a national holiday Bastille Day also in the middle of the summer.

It was a shocking and controversial budget but not entirely unexpected.

France faces the challenge of compliance with fiscal rules of the European Union and compliance with the increase in NATO defense spending as demanded by US President Donald Trump.

A tight spending plan outside of defense required by those standards including less spending on health care.

The budget denounced by the Left and Right opposing President Emmanuel Macron and his forces in the National Assembly that don't have a majority.

Macron has the power of Article 49.3 of the Fifth Republic constitution that Charles de Gaulle demanded to become France's first president under it.

He can force the budget through without a National Assembly vote.

If the opposition join forces to censure the government in response the road to new elections is opened where the opposition may be able to maintain or even gain legislative strength.
