Recently US President Donald Trump said the notorious Alcatraz Island prison in the waters off San Francisco was to reopen again.
But there is a prison just as notorious in fact more so the system of penal colonies in French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America...Devil's Island Wikipedia...
They were dubbed Devil's Island operating for a century from 1852 to 1952. Harsh conditions including forced labor and death and disease all part of its history.
This week the former Interior Minister now Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin back on the ground in French Guiana touting plans for a new high-security prison in the vicinity of what was once Devil's Island.
Darmanin's visit follows recent acts of violence involving attacks on French prisons. The attacks linked to drug gangs.
He said the new prison would host drug kingpins and radical Islamists. It will have a capacity of 500 inmates...

Gerald Darmanin's tough prison proposal is clearly linked to his presidential aspirations in 2027. Last month Mr. Darmanin telling French media he wants to be president and 'deeply influence' the country.
Darmanin finds his political home right now in the Liberal Capitalist "Renaissance" party of President Emmanuel Macron. Darmanin was once part of the "Mainstream Right" Les Republicans before bolting to the "Centrist" Macron camp...
