"Ruling expected in 2 weeks on forensic experts in case of indicted FBI agent"

The arguments wound up Friday (May 25th) as the defense lawyers for FBI Agent W. Joseph Astarita,  charged with lying five times about shooting twice at Oregon Standoff protester LaVoy Finicum,  worked with their own experts and cross examination to discredit expert witnesses set to testify at trial.

The objective of their exercise may have been to remove evidence against their client but it also may have been designed to give a public airing to the discrediting of evidence before the jury pool ahead of Astarita's trial, set to begin July 24th.

The final decision about what evidence will be allowed rests with the judge in the case, Senior US District Judge Robert E. Jones.

Jones was involved in the detention of those arrested when LaVoy was killed on January 26, 2016 and told Ammon Bundy and his brother Ryan, believed injured by one of the FBI agents bullets, that they would not be released on bail.

In an earlier court proceeding, Judge Jones told defense lawyers objecting to the five charges against Astarita claiming they were redundant that while he agreed with their assessment, he would not rule against the prosecution.

Prosecutors are charging Astarita with lying three different times to his FBI supervisors and two times to Oregon police investigating the shooting death of LaVoy Finicum.
