ITALY LATEST:  "ELECTIONS NOW" PRESSURE BUILDS, PRO-EU INTERIM PRIME MINISTER HESITATES, EU OFFICIAL CAUSES ROW

The leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, has called for new elections as soon as possible.

Salvini expressed his concern about an interim government run by Carlo Cottarelli, a former International Monetary Fund official named as Prime Minister by President Sergio Mattarella.

ANSA News Agency quotes Salvini:

"One thing is sure and that is that we can't have a phantom government that hikes VAT and raises petrol duty and then goes away undisturbed after three or four months....."

Today Salvini  said:

"Sergio Mattarella give us a date for the vote and the Italian people will do justice for what has happened".

Cottarelli met President Mattarella today for what were described as "informal talks" as he continues to plan the interim government.   Mattarella, a former Uniparty politician of the "Left",  designated him as Prime Minister after rejecting an attempt by the outsider parties (Five Star and League) to form a government with a solid parliamentary majority.

Leaders of Italy's outsider parties, the Five Star and League and even some Uniparty politicians in Italy were disturbed by European Budget Commissioner Geunther Oettinger's statement saying the financial markets would tell Italians not to vote for the outsider parties in new elections.

It reinforces the view of the outsider parties that the "markets"-business and banking elites are really running Italy and that there is no "Left and "Right"  opposing each other for control of government, a view recently expressed to "Newsweek" by Five Star founder-leader comedian Beppe Grillo.
