ITALY LATEST: PRO-EU FORCES ATTACK AHEAD OF FINAL CALL ON NEW GOVERNMENT

"So the international press and Italian press are going wild over presumed qualifications that Conte has never claimed to have"

Statement from "Five Star Movement" in Italy May 22, 2018

The Italian President Sergio Mattarella may decide tomorrow (Wednesday May 23rd) whether to accept a new coalition government of outsider political parties (Five Star and League) led by Florence University law professor Giuseppe Conte.

The Italian president held consultations today with the speakers of both houses of Italy's parliament.

But Conte is being probed by mainstream media claiming he may have an "inflated resume" with the "New York Times" obtaining a statement from New York University saying "A person by that name does not show up in any of our records as either a student or faculty member."

The Five-Star Movement was quick to defend the Prime Minister choice Conte noting he did not claim to have received any degrees or taking any specific courses, only to have spent a summer at NYU to perfect his "English legal language skills".

There is a "Financial Times" report of an impasse between the parties and President Mattarella over the choice of a finance minister.

Media reports say the proposed new government will include Paolo Savona as the finance minister.

Savona is reported by the media to be staunchly anti-Euro and has said Italy may need to pull out of the currency for the sake of its working people.
