PROTEST IN PARIS AGAINST PRESIDENT EMMANUEL MACRON'S PENSION REFORM PLAN 1/31/2023
As the largest crowds yet took to the streets Tuesday objecting to President Emmanuel Macron's pension reform scheme, Macron moved in another direction talking Ukraine and saying additional options were possible like warplanes.
Many see more weapons for Ukraine as having the potential to lead to "World War Three" with nuclear weapons a possibility.
But back in France when it comes to pensions Mr. Macron has a 'nuclear option' to force through his 'pension reform' proposal.
It's the use of Article 49.3 of France's 1958 Constitution (The Fifth Republic) one of the many strong powers dictated by Charles De Gaulle for France's president as conditions for his assumption of the office.
Article 49.3 allows a French president to approve legislation without approval of the National Assembly.
Macron's Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne downplayed that notion this week suggesting a deal could be worked out on pensions.
The mainstream "Conservative" Les Republicains hold around 60 seats in the Assembly and much of the Senate.
This week former President Nicolas Sarkozy gave his endorsement to the pension reform proposed by Macron.
Sarkozy is from Les Republicains.
Following this week's massive strikes-protests (2.8 million demonstrating according to organizers, 1.272 million according to the government) 2/3 of those polled support continued protests-strikes.
More days of protests-strikes set for next week (Tuesday February 7th and Saturday February 11th).
The National Rally President Jordan Bardella said this week that France needs tax incentives to increase the nation's birth rate and the number of future payers into the pension system.
