ITALY UPDATE: FIVE STAR CALLS FOR MASS PROTEST, BERLUSCONI LURKS IN THE WINGS, LEAGUE KEEPS OPTIONS

                                            (NEWS, COMMENT AND ANALYSIS)

"I went out this morning and I saw this depressing thing, people not speaking, with empty looks on their faces, as if they had been replaced by an alien like in a sci-fi film.  Why aren't people talking?   Why are people depressed?  Because they're talking in the place of millions of Italians: the market.  The market today is the pseudonym of the most depressing and predatory capitalism that we have in Italy"

Italy's Five Star Movement has called on Italians to take to the streets in mass protest Saturday against the President's refusal to accept a Five Star-League coalition government that commanded 50 percent of the popular vote in the last election and a majority of seats in both houses of parliament.

One of the more interesting and suspicious developments in Italy happened weeks ago when it became apparent a Five Star-League coalition was emerging.

There was the sudden Saturday decision of a Milan court to "rehabilitate" the former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Until that decision, Berlusconi had been excluded from running from political office because of a corruption conviction.

The flamboyant Berlusconi was a big supporter of the old Socialist Party in Italy when he emerged as a media magnate in the 1980's but then in the 1990's as Berlusconi entered politics  he used the name "Forza Italia" for his political party and became a man of the "Right".

The style of the multi-billionaire has been compared to Donald Trump, but his policies are more Jeb Bush like.

Berlusconi rushed to the defense of the Italian President Sergio Mattarella when he vetoed the Five Star-League coalition by refusing to accept their finance minister designate and Five Star called for his impeachment.

Berlusconi is clearly the tool of the EU-Corporatists and Globalists in Italy and it is certainly their hope he can now run for office and get enough votes for his party to patch together a ruling coalition with the League to stop the even more anti-Establishment EU Five Star Movement from getting into power.

In the last election his Forza Italia party fell short of that goal with the only possible majority coalition being that of the Five-Star and League.

Now Berlusconi says the "only solution" for Italy is an alliance between his Uniparty "Right" FI party and the League.

League leader Matteo Salvini is quoted by the ANSA news agency saying he is keeping his options open as to future coalition partners for his party between FI and Five Star telling an Italian television program last night:  "I am thinking about it....I will not give up dignity and loyalty".

Today Salvini warned Silvio Berlusconi's FI party that they will not remain allies unless the FI commits to changing the European Union rules.  He said:

"I cannot be allied with someone who says Europe is fine as it is"

The Milan market spread on Italian debt bonds continued to rise to extremely high levels in fear of an anti-EU government emerging from the political turmoil.
