SYRIA LATEST: GOVERNMENT OFFENSIVE IN FULL SWING AGAIN, RUSSIAN COMMENTS ON SYRIA
Punctuated by a massive ground barrage and numerous air strikes late Wednesday (July 4th), the Assad regime forces of the Syrian Arab Army and supporting militias relaunched their offensive in the Deraa region.
Today (July 5th) pro-government sources say the town of Saida was taken back from opposition forces enabling the government troops to move southwards towards the Jordanian border including the Nassib crossing on the M5 highway.
But intense fighting continues to the northwest of Deraa city at Tafas, where an ISIS affiliated force is resisting the government offensive.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said yesterday that there must be an "uncompromising struggle" against terrorist forces like ISIS in Syria and that the notion of Iran being excluded from Syria completely was "unrealistic".
Lavrov said:
"It is clear that this is absolutely unrealistic and that it will not be possible to solve regional problems without the participation of its key countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and many others"
The Russians announced ahead of the current offensive in the southwest that Iranian forces were moved away from areas close to the southwestern borders with Israel and Jordan.
